Chartered Quantity Surveyors are the cost managers of construction. They are initially involved with the capital expenditure phase of a building or facility, which is the feasibility, design and construction phases. But quantity surveyors can also be involved with the extension, refurbishment, maintenance and demolition of a facility.

When working for clients the processes traditionally follow the  general routes below:-
  1. Prepare an initial budget estimate
  2. Prepare a preliminary cost plan
  3. Develop and update the cost plan during design
  4. Advise on tender / contractual procurement options
  5. Prepare pricing documents for inclusion in the tender documents
  6. Review and report on tender submissions
  7. Negotiate and finalise tender value(s) for contract placement
  8. Preparation of Contract Documentation
  9. Interim Valuations required during the contrcat period
  10. Advise on cost of variations and agree cost of instructions
  11. Advise on the rights and obligations of the parties to the Building Contract
  12. Prepare the Fnal Account or Adjusted Contract Sum to faclitate financial agreement between the parties

Services do vary depending on the level of involvement required and the procurement route used.
